Episode Synopsis
"Most of Earth's defense squadron becomes incapacitated after ingesting poisoned food discs. Buck travels to the planet of the food's origin, Vistula, with Wilma and flight instructor "Duke" Danton, and old boyfriend of Wilma's. On the planet, they trace the plot to a man named Kaleel who has been selling slaves to the planet's governor and secretly building an attack fleet. With so few fighter pilots, Earth's defense force is now outnumbered 10-to-1. Buck must rescue Wilma from Kaleel's mountain fortress and destroy the fleet before they can reach Earth."
"The majority of Earth's fighter squadron becomes ill and unable to fly after consuming poisoned food discs. Buck, Wilma, and Duke Denton fly to a distant planet to track down a slave trader named Kaleel. While on the planet Vistula, they find that Kaleel has been building a fleet of attack ships in secret, and plans to use them against Earth's meager defense forces. With Earth heavily outnumbered, Buck decides that he must destroy the alien's ships and rescue Wilma, who has become trapped in Kaleel's mountain fortress."

The evil Kaleel's plots against Earth are thwarted in the second half of "Planet of the Slave Girls." Some other high points of this two part episode - the establishment of Wilma and Buck's ambiguous relationship by re--introducing her old boyfriend Duke Danton into the mix (played by David Groh, best known as Rhoda Morgenstern's husband). Roddy McDowell is always delightful and it is nice to see him here, even in a bit part. And finally, the piece de resistance is the cameo appearance of Buster Crabbe playing Brigadier Gordon (Mr. Crabbe played the roles of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and Tarzan in the old movie serials). The exchange between Gil Gerard and Mr. Crabbe is full of inside jokes, including I think a triple-entendre about who has been battling space baddies longer. Worth the price of admission for this scene alone. If it were a movie.. well, you know what I mean. Four stars.

Fantastic to see Buster Crabbe make an appearance in this episode as Brigadier Gordon (as in Flash Gordon), teaming up with Buck to fight Kaleel's men in a space battle finale (and lets not forget that Twiki and Dr Theopolis get in on the action).
And the tactics used in this battle, are well...loosely based on American Football. Way to go Buck!
Of course Brigadier Gordon was doing this sort of thing before Buck was born : )

Again, like in the first part, I have to give this one two thumbs up. While this one had more brass tacks and less of the fun and games, it was still tight and enjoyable. Here we have Buck and Duke Denton, (Buck's football dummy in the first episode and rival for Wilma's affections, so to speak), coming to terms with one another and learning to work together in the desert after their starfighter is brought down by Kaleel (Palance). Wilma and the slave girl, Ryma, have to be rescued, Kaleel's fleet destroyed, Kaleel himself stopped from his evil designs. Buck goes into Kaleel's desert fortress to rescue Wilma while Duke goes back to Earth for help. Duke is only able to muster a few pilots, the rest incpacitated by the food poisoning that sent Buck, Wilma and others to Vistula in the first place. But among those fighters is the retired Brigadier Gordon, played by the late, great Buster Crabbe. That provided some wonderful dialogue between his character and Gil's.
All in all, a very satisfying and fun episode. Well worth the 90 plus minutes (minus commercials) that it took to watch it. And a wonderful start to the show.
