Writer(s):Norman Hudis

 Episode Synopsis

"Buck, Wilma and Twiki are assigned duty aboard the Searcher, a long distance space probe. Under the command of Admiral Asimov, the ship sets out to find various groups of humans that left Earth before the holocaust. Buck's first adventure aboard the Searcher begins when they find a nearly-destroyed spaceship, whose last living crew member reveals that a bird-like man named Hawk attacked and destroyed their ship. In retaliation for the destruction of his tribe by humans, the bird-man has vowed to destroy any and all humans he comes across. Buck tracks Hawk down to the planet Throm, when he captures Koori, Hawk's mate. Koori sends out a message to Hawk, who arrives to battle Buck to the death."

Time of the Hawk was originally a two hour episode, and I remember when I first watched it that it started off well and lost its way in the middle. All the best elements of the episode, the intro of the characters of Hawk and Koori, the cool battle sequence between Hawk's ship and Buck's, and the introduction of our new cast of characters is all in the first half. The last half mostly involves the lingering death of Koori, the fist fight between Hawk and Buck and Hawk's trial - all of which are slow paced and boring. The weird prophet figure (with an obviously fake beard) who tries to save Koori and fails is a throwaway, and the Galactic Court makes very little sense, and does not clearly fit into existing continuity. That after all of his struggles Hawk would decide to join up with the humans of the Searcher also seems dubious. One high point - the second season's penchant for location shoots (as opposed to sets) is in full effect - at what appears to be Malibu State Park. The first part gets a four - but Time of the Hawk Part II doesn't follow through - two stars.

I enjoyed the irony of how Buck and Hawk relate. Initially enemies, by necessity they become temporary allies, as both agree that the emergency situation with Hawk’s desperately injured wife Koori overrides all else. Buck helps to carry Koori on an exhausting trek for medical help; Hawk is willing to help Buck defend himself against a band of thugs, even though the odds look really grim. However, after all this, they end up in deadly combat with each other. I don’t understand why things can’t be resolved without resorting to violence, but having said that, it is the most well choreographed fight sequence of any episode. Check out that back somersault from Hawk! Buck gives an impassioned speech in defense of Hawk at the trial, which I found moving. While I agree that this is not classic Buck Rogers fare (what with the loss of many familiar elements), it still makes for entertaining viewing in its own right.
